If one speaks about Continuous Improvement it normally boils down to changing people's minds and attitude towards improving processes and having commitment towards service delivery.
At TMS Richards Bay we wanted to better our service delivery to our client, South32 in all aspects of the business, and in May last year we embarked on a Turnaround Strategy that focused on 9 aspects as follows;
1. Reporting of Information
2. Improving of Safety Culture
3. Adherence to Schedule
6. Employee Morale
7. Training of Employees
8. Providing expert solutions to our Client
9. Business Continuous Plan
Through team work and commitment we embarked on tackling each of these aspects individually, working out what, where and how, and integrate them into a plan to achieve the desired results. From a Scorecard compliance of 53% in May 2015 we improved to 93% in January 2016, each month ensuring that we strive towards improvement.
We implemented an Employee Incentive Programme in the middle of last year, which assisted in driving the commitment from our teams working on site.
We have gone beyond the norm, to train our employees in areas such as Confined Spaces, Working at Heights, Stacking and Storage, Supervisory and other training to improve the knowledge of our employees to ensure that they grow within our Business.
To ensure that we keep a strong Safety Culture we trained one member of each team as a Safety Representative as part of his/her role and responsibility. This proved to be a success instantly as it upped our level of safety awareness and gave us the support we needed within each team.
We improved our vehicle maintenance to ensure reliability and sustainability of our service delivery, and are now maintaining an average of 85% monthly.
But, all our successes could not have been achieved without the solid support from TMS Management as well as the support of departments such as Finance, Payroll, etc. In our next phase of our turnaround strategy we now need to put this truck into second gear to ensure that we grow our footprint in Richards Bay to become a leader in the provision of Industrial Services.
